Charlie Parker
Cognitive Behavioural Therapist in Durham

I provide a high quality and personnal service to individuals and organisations. Based in the North of England, and with over 14 years experience of working in the NHS. Over the last 7 years I have developed a private practice providing a service for solicitors, insurance companies, General Practitioners, private healthcare insurers, occupational health companies and private individuals.

After completing a History Degree in the early 1990's I then completed nurse training (Psychiatry) in West Yorkshire. Following time gaining experience working within forensic and adolescent settings, I then completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at Durham University. Shortly after this I returned to the NHS gaining experience working within a CBT centre as a therapist and trainer. I commenced working as a private practitioner in 2007 and completed a CBT degree in 2008.

I currently work for a number of Health Trusts working with adults, referred by General Practitioners and Psychiatrists. I am also employed to provide supervision to individuals and organisations. Clinically I aim to help people find the best ways of coping for themselves without the need for lengthy therapy. I aim to provide information and advice to as wide a range of people as possible through this website, utilising material that I have produced myself and information accessible through the internet.

Approach to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & How I Work

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a system of psychotherapy based upon a body of experimental and clinical studies and well defined therapeutic techniques. CBT is a short-term therapy, normally between 3 and 15 sessions. It is a structured form of psychotherapy designed to alleviate symptoms and to help people learn more effective ways of dealing with difficulties contributing to their suffering. The therapeutic thrust of cognitive therapy is problem-orientated. Unlike other talking treatments, CBT focuses on the problems and difficulties you have now, rather than issues from your past. It looks for practical ways you can improve your state of mind on a daily basis.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is an evidenced based psychological therapy and is recommended by the Department of Health and the National Institute for Clinical Excellance (NICE) http://guidance.nice.org.uk/topic/behavioural for a range of mental health problems. This evidence has been generated through years of psychological research, clinical trials, case studies and professional guidelines. The therapy is collaborative and aims to help the client's understanding of how their problems developed, what maintains them and what needs to happen to address these difficulties.
