I am a registered and accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I have worked at RSVP (Rape & Sexual Violence Project) in Birmingham since the beginning of my counselling journey. This has given me invaluable experience of working with clients of different ages, genders and backgrounds within a charitable organisation. In addition to this, I have worked with those experiencing grief and supported those struggling in the work environment via an employee assistance programme.
I graduated from the University of Birmingham with my BSc (Hons) undergraduate degree in Psychology. I then furthered my studies at Keele University whereby I graduated with a MSc (Level 7) degree in Counselling & Psychotherapy.

Person-centred counselling is a non-directing therapeutic approach commonly used by mental health practitioners. It is based on the research of Carl Rogers who strongly believed that no other person's ideas could be valid as one's own individual experience, and that exploring these experiences in a supportive, non-judgmental environment is necessary in order to achieve positive change.
Carl Rogers promoted the use of the word "client" rather than the word "patient" within the world of mental health as he attempted to equalise the power imbalance between counsellor and client. He believed seeing our clients as patients suggested that, as counsellors, we were in a position of power and had authority over who knew best. In reality, clients are the experts of their own lives and therapists are only exposed to a fraction of their lives. Person-centred counselling is therefore based on the idea that counsellors and their clients are equals.
Person-centred counselling is very much client led. The counsellor will never directly ask a client to talk about something unless the client has brought up the topic themselves. This allows for the clients to take their healing process at their own pace and not feel pressured into speaking about something that they are not ready to explore.
This form of counselling doesn't aim to solve a particular problem but rather helps the client understand themselves better and increase their level of self-awareness. As a result, they feel more confident making decisions, have an increased self-esteem and feel in control of their next steps.
