Matt Patterson Counselling

Matt Patterson
Counsellor in Worcetsre

I was badly bullied at boarding school, which left me with low self esteem and a lack of self confidence. As a result i spent much of my early adulthood feeling depressed and anxious, unabke to hold down a job or maintain a relationship.

This all changed when I found the courage to attend some therapy sessions. Like many people I was uncertain about this at the start, surely therapy is for people with serious mental health issues? Not to mention the potential shame I might feel.

What I discovered was a safe, encouraging environment where I could explore my experience and feelings without fear of judgement. Somewhere I could make sense of all the confusing feelings that were inhibiting me from fully living my life. Through this process I was able to put myself back together and start living my life more fully and with greater confidence.

My personal experience of therapy therefore gave me great confidence that the process has the potential to help anyone, no matter what their circumstances or life experiences.

Since I have completed my Therapy Diploma I have been using the skills I learned to help many people in the same way that I have been helped by the process.

I will use the therapy space to create a safe, non judgemental space in which you can bring whatever experiences may be causing you difficulties, and where we can explore these in a manner that will help you to find confidence in yourself, and a deeper and more satisfying connection with yourself, your loved ones and the wider world.

I have also been a practicing Buddhist for 20 years, and so the principals of mindfulness and compassion that underpin this also inform my therapy practice.

Background & Counselling Qualifications

I have a diploma in Integrative Therapy

My Specialisms

I have carried out a lot of work with men of all ages helping them to find a way to fully express themselves in a way to express their energy fully in the world in ways that do not require them to dominate or be dominated.

This requires working with both the masculine and feminine energies. Too much of one can lead to aggression and a need to dominate, too much of the other can lead to a lack of vitality and confidence. I therefore aim to help clients find a balance between the two.

I also have an interest in working in and with nature, and can offer outdoor sessions to help foster a greater connection with nature, and our place within it.

Approach to Counselling & How I Work

As an integrative therapist I am trained in the use of a variety of therapeutic theories and techniques, and so can use these to tailor our sessions to suit your needs and temperament. This also means I can be flexible and so adapt the way we are working to meet your needs as they change and grow throughout our time working together.

I work in an open ended way, which means that we will not be restricted to a specific number of sessions, allowing us to work together as long as is needed to work through whatever issues may have brought you to therapy in the first place. However, it is my experience that the struggles we face rarely happen in isolation, but are related to other aspects of your consciousness, and more specifically your unconscious. I will work with you to help uncover these hidden depths, sifting through the uncomfortable and painful experiences to find the gold, finding the confidence to allow vulnerability and so lead a more full and happy life.
