Prior to qualifying as a psychotherapist, I worked as an entrepreneur, business consultant and as a sales and negotiation trainer. I was awarded my post graduate diploma in 1997 by the CCPE (Centre for Counselling & Psychotherapy Education). I am a full member of the UKCP. I also hold a post-graduate diploma in 'counselling and psychotherapy supervision' and a certificate in CBT from the Beck Institute.
In addition to my private practice, I have worked as a counsellor within the NHS and for several mental health charities.
With over 20 years of experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I have worked with several hundred people and developed skills for working with a wide range of issues and problems. Over that time I have developed three areas of specialisation.
I am most frequently consulted by people dealing with relationship issues. Relationships - either personal or in the world of work and business - can not only be a source of joy and fulfilment, but can also confront us with some of our most difficult challenges. This has continually been my main specialisation since I qualified as a counsellor and psychotherapist.
In recent years I have seen a big increase in people who have sought my help with anxiety and/or depression. Sometimes they have been formally diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or with panic attacks. As with relationship issues, I have developed a specialisation in this area and have successfully helped many people to overcome these debilitating problems and regain their enjoyment of life.
The third area of my specialism is in the area of personal development, coaching and achieving optimum performance. Drawing on my background in business and in organisational development, I am uniquely placed to help people find meaningful and creative solutions to a wide range of issues whether in business or in their private life.
I describe my approach as integrative as I have studied and trained in more than one approach. Originally, I was extensively trained in Transpersonal Psychotherapy. I have also studied Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Process Oriented Psychotherapy. The different approaches all have something to offer and may or may not be right for you, depending on your current needs and the issues that you are facing.
A principle of my work is that it is the relationship between my client and myself that provides the opportunity for change and healing to take place, irrespective of the approach used. That said, the right approach can facilitate faster progress. In discussion with my client, a particular approach or combination of approaches usually becomes apparent. If that approach is something I can offer, then we can proceed, if not, then I would make a referral to a more suitable professional.
I have been told that I am approachable and that I provide a calm and non-judgemental space for clients to explore their issues and concerns. I am naturally empathic and clients have often remarked that they feel seen and understood in my sessions. I have a sense of humour and firmly believe that even in the darkest and loneliest of situations, laughter is possible and often healing.
