MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD)
MLD is a specialised therapy which is designed to improve the functioning of the lymphatic system. This is primarily achieved through gentle, rhythmical circling movements of the skin which stimulate the contractions of the lymphatic vessels. As a result a greater amount of the metabolic waste products and excess fluid are being removed from the body's tissues and enter the lymphatic system. The fluid is now known as lymph and passes through a series of lymph nodes (lymph glands) where it is cleansed of dead cells, bacteria and other waste products. The clean lymph is then returned to the blood stream.
A well-functioning lymph system contributes to healthy body tissue and plays an important part in the body's immune system responses

During the 1930's the innovative Danish physical therapist Dr. Emil Vodder created a unique set of movements which he successfully used to clear chronic catarrh and facial acne. After intensively studying what was then known as the lymphatic system he devised treatments for the whole body. He concludes that his technique, which he termed Manual Lymph drainage, could be applied to almost any condition, because of the important role the lymphatic system plays in our bodies. Since Dr Vodder's pioneering work, modern research has supplied us with the answers of how his method so effectively influences both the lymphatic and nervous system. As a result, MLD has spread worldwide and has become a popular treatment in many European hospitals and Spas.

MLD is gaining acceptance in the treatment of some conditions such as sinus congestion, rheumatoid arthritis, fluid congestion: swollen ankles, tired puffy eyes and swollen legs due to pregnancy. MLD is also deeply relaxing and promotes the healing of fractures, torn ligaments, sprains, lessens pain and may strengthen the immune system as part of "detox" treatment. MLD not only promotes healing of wounds and burns and improves the appearance of old scars, but also can be used to speed healing after cosmetic surgery and vaser treatments.

In the UK MLD is continuing to be more widely accepted as an important component in the treatment and maintenance of lymphoedema and assists in conditions arising from venous insufficiency. Lymphoedema may occur following damage to the lymphatic system due to cancer, radiotherapy, surgery, fibrosis, infection, injury or congenital abnormalities. It is a collection of protein-rich fluid, which presents itself as a swelling in the soft tissues below the skin, resulting in the malfunction of drainage by the lymphatic channels. There are emerging surgeries to repair damaged lymphatics, however, using MLD therapy the lymph fluid from a congested swollen area of the body can be directed to an area where the lymphatics are working.

SHARON WHEELER's SCARWORK

ScarWork is a light-touch manual therapy, using hands directly on the surface of the skin without the aid of lubricants or medical devices, to address tissue damage associated with scarring, including fibrosis, adhesions, and contracture, resulting from surgery or trauma. While numerous therapies deal with pain and dysfunction related to tissue damage associated with daily living or activity, ScarWork is specifically designed to address the changed elastin and collagen associated with pathological scarring. Sharon Wheeler, an American therapist, developed these techniques over the last 40 years and now teaches around the world. ScarWork treatment is a gentle therapy, treatment is always given within the client's comfort levels.

PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA IN ADVANCED CLINICAL MASSAGE AND SPORTS MASSAGE
With this qualification, one has gained a much deeper understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathologies. Treatment techniques include myofascial release (direct and indirect methods), sports techniques such as soft tissue release and event massage , orthopaedic assessment to determine cause of injury and appropriate treatment including rehabilitation and advanced stretching techniques, and pain management in many chronic conditions.
