Alongside my private practice, I work in an NHS multidisciplinary team offering mentalization-based treatment (MBT) to adults with complex emotional needs.
As a social worker, I've held a variety of positions in local authorities, charities, and the NHS. I became particularly interested in therapeutic practice with children and adults. In conjunction with my social work career, I embarked on various trainings and placements in counselling and psychotherapy with adults. I have worked for Cruse providing bereavement counselling, for an NHS psychotherapy service in Southwark, and for a private psychotherapy practice in Belgravia.
Currently nearing completion of a demanding programme in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP), I chose to complete this longer and more comprehensive training because of my belief and experience that working at depth can facilitate significant and long-lasting changes in the psyche.
My attitude is to remain open to whatever you might bring. Everyone who begins psychotherapy does so for their own unique and personal reasons, but some common issues include:
Emotional distress
Relationship difficulties
Searching for meaning
Significant life events
Distressing behaviours
Questions of identity
I work using a psychodynamic approach, which emphasises the importance of unconscious psychological processes in the development of personality and associated patterns of feeling, thinking, and behaving. This means we will be working at the deeper levels of your psyche to create longer lasting change. Depth psychology, as it is also known, draws on the role of childhood experience in current issues.
I will endeavour to remain consistent and reliable over time, and hopefully you feel I am empathic to whatever you bring. When working with the unconscious, it is not unusual for relational patterns to repeat themselves in therapy. This can be challenging, but I believe this kind of approach provides a unique opportunity to work through complex dynamics and develop new ways of relating in a safe setting.
My thinking is developmental, meaning that I pay attention to early life experiences and believe psychological maturation emerges when the environment facilitates growth. I draw on psychoanalytic theory on the role of relationships (the work of Freud, Klein, Winnicott, Bion and others), but I am also influenced by my own Jungian analysis and Carl Jung's ideas about psyche having a forward looking and purposive nature.
