I trained with the British Psychotherapy Foundation (BPF) and am a full member of the British Jungian Analytic Association (BJAA) of the BPF. The training is rigorous and and includes an intensive personal analysis. I am registered with the International Association of Analytical Psychology (IAAP) and the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and I follow their code of ethics. You will find me on the BPC and BPF websites.
My training and approach is to meet the person and their anxieties, conscious and unconscious, whatever they may be and whatever form they may take.. Symptoms, in all their myriad manifestations, are communications from the psyche that require admittance. So often the wish is to get rid of the symptom, as though it can be cured, cut out by some sort of psychic surgery, when often it is the voice that needs to be heard, understood and integrated. Thus a fuller, deeper and more creative attitude toward and awareness of oneself and the world can be reached.
My practice is underpinned by a wide ranging understanding of theoretical and clinical thinking - Freudian, Jungian and their successors, through to more current developmental and neuro-scientific understanding of the human brain and psyche.
I work relationally, person-to-person, in a room kept safe and free from intrusion.
People come with symptoms and troubles often to do with their relationships to themselves and others, past and present, including society and culture. These engender feelings of unhappiness, sometimes despair, at the sense of helplessness in the face of them, leaving a person feeling stuck and trapped, or distressingly apart from themselves. I look to foster the creative flow and a dialogue with the unconscious, through which each individual can recover their capacity to be with themselves and the world in which they live.
The relationship between the patient and myself and the space in which we meet become a conduit for that person to creatively and safely explore their own terrain and narratives as they unfold through talk, silence, thought, sound, image, gesture, dream...
Through these meetings a loosening and a broadening of each person's experience of themselves enables changes that cannot be predicted. These can take time to slowly emerge, or be quite sudden and dramatic.
