I have over a decade of helpline experience, including the 24-hour crisis service Shout, Pain Concern's helpline helping people face acute and chronic pain conditions, as well as the Blue Cross Pet Loss Support line. I have been a Cruse volunteer since 2022: I give 1-to-1 support, provide assessments and I help run group workshops focused on bereavement by suicide. Although I have levels 4 and 5 counselling qualifying diplomas in counselling practice, a Therapeutic Safety in Trauma diploma and I'm taking courses in common mental health diagnoses, the majority of my learning and growth comes from working with my clients.
Disability, (physical, sensory, neurological). Grief, bereavement and loss including pets and working animals. Depression, anxiety; fears and phobias.
I see myself as an integrative counsellor, incorporating elements from the Person-Centred Approach, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychodynamics. I've blended different aspects of them together to create my own therapeutic combo.
PCA.
This is my overall framework. It includes but is not limited to:
Congruence.
Being my genuine self with you.
Empathy.
Doing my best to understand your situation from your point-of-view.
Unconditional Positive Regard.
My complete acceptance and compassion for you, regardless of what you might say or do
CBT.
Thoughts, feelings, behaviours. They all effect each other and changing any aspect of this triangle will alter the other two. Tools and strategies from this approach can be great for reducing troubling symptoms
Psychodynamics.
Sometimes the best ideas stem from finding the root cause of an issue. We may need to explore in order to find it, sometimes bringing ideas from unconscious awareness out into the open.
I work in a trauma-informed manner, using body-orientated ideas from somatic experiencing. In plain English, we talk but we might also use guided imagery, breathing, body movements, drawing or experimenting with textured objects.
The sky's the limit but however we might work together, we collaborate on everything.
