What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a gentle but effective system of medicine which assists the bodies natural tendency to heal itself. It recognises that symptoms of ill health are declarations of disharmony within the whole person. In other words it is the patient who needs treatment NOT the dis-ease. Homeopathy comes from the Greek word meaning ‘similar suffering’. This different approach to cure the sick was discovered by a German doctor in 1796. Like Hippocrates two thousand years earlier, Samuel Hahnemann realised there were two ways of treating ill health, the way of opposites, most commonly used by conventional medicine and the way of similars.
Take for example, a case of insomnia. The way of opposites is to treat this by giving a drug to bring on artificial sleep. This is ok every once in a while but if this condition becomes chronic the use of regular doses of drugs can sometimes cause side effects or addiction. The way of similars, the homeopathic approach is to give the patient a minute dose of a substance, such as coffee, which in large doses causes sleeplessness in a healthy person. Homeopathy, stimulates the bodies own Healing abilities. Homeopathy is patient centred; the homeopath will prescribe based on the totality of symptoms and how these symptoms are as an individual experience to them. This also takes into account the patient as a person, in other words what makes them an individual both emotionally and physically.
So, how can this help you? Our health is optimum for our success. Not just financial, but it makes the difference between existing and living. Conventional medicine treats the symptoms, Homeopathy treats the cause. Homeopathy treats the WHOLE body and is a brilliant form of preventative medicine. Just like we take our cars to have a MOT on a regular basis to avoid larger and more costly problems, our bodies need the same attention. When we feel well we perform better, both on a mental and physical level. In a national survey conducted by The Society Homeopaths, 87% of patients who complained of mental and emotional problems reported positive change. Stress in the work environment is one of the leading causes of employees taking time off. The symptoms can be observed on a physical plane- chronic upper respiratory complaints, IBS, migraines to mental symptoms that spiral to nervous breakdown. Keeping in mind the connection that exists between the mind and body, the homeopath whilst treating the whole person aims to stimulate and strengthen the immune system, thereby helping the bodies natural ability to heal itself.
One patient described how she felt after receiving homeopathic treatment:
'My energy levels went up, sleeping loads better and my headaches have subsided. I have learnt how to recognise when I need to slow down in order for me to feel my personal best'.
